Real estate professionals and industry experts are calling on the government to put palliative measures in place to enable them tackle the challenge of housing deficit in the country.

They emphasized that it had become necessary for the government to emulate a former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, the first democratically elected governor of the state. The stakeholders reiterated that Alhaji Lateef Jankande in his capacity as a governor implemented policies that created about 30,000 housing units across the state within a four-year period.

Making this call, was a former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Osita Ogbu, who pointed out that leadership should be about bridging the housing shortage for the benefit of the poor in the country.

Ogbu maintained that the Land Decree Act of 1978 was meant to be a goal and happiness for all but now has turned out to be happiness for the rich.

The former Minister reminded the stakeholders that the government should have a business in housing as it is done in western countries and not just creating the basic infrastructure for businesses to strive but creating low-cost housing shortage.

He called on the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to pass a law that would increase the tenement rate in highbrow areas of the state such as Victoria Island, Ikoyi and Ikeja. Adding that the proceeds should develop low-cost housing units for the vast majority of the citizenry and not the affordable housing unit we all know; and be named the Jakande Act.
